Cancer stigma is a great problem in South Africa, it touches all groups, ages and genders and impacts cancer patients daily.
With our current survey we aim to gain more information and insight into the role of cancer stigma in our communities.
Are you a cancer survivor or caregiver looking to help by supporting someone newly diagnosed with a similar cancer to yours?
Cancer Buddies are recruited from all over South Africa to provide support, empathy and understanding to a cancer patient or caregiver. Sometimes the best treatment is just talking to someone who has “been there”.
Each Cancer Buddy completes a detailed form describing his or her personal experience with cancer. Your information will be confidential and is never shared with anyone except when allocating and linking you to a new cancer patient who has asked for help. We appreciate your patience in completing this very detailed form as this will assist us in matching patients and buddies much more effectively. Be assured that we appreciate the fact that you are willing to get involved with this process. The application form is our first introduction to you as part of the Cancer Buddy organisation.
The linking and referral process is coordinated by an qualified member of our staff who first assesses the new patient’s needs and then allocates a Cancer Buddy according to emotional needs, type of cancer and treatment undergone. Each patient’s level of distress is also determined to ensure an appropriate referral.
Cancer Buddies’ details are then captured and placed on our database, and will be contacted when matched to a new referral. These may have been received via the toll-free number, personal referrals via the public, doctors, emails or the Cancer Buddies website.
Please register online by completing the form below: “Becoming a Cancer Buddy“. We will contact you personally, as soon as we receive the form, for an interview with one of our qualified staff members. The training session will then follow .
